Look who’s Here! New endangered greater bilbies have just arrived!
We are so excited to welcome two female bilbies, Tanami and Ninu, to Billabong Sanctuary!
Both 2 years old, they come from a captive breeding programme at Charleville, managed by the Save the Bilby Fund.
The greater bilby was on the brink of extinction because of predation by feral cats and foxes. To preserve the species, bilbies bred at Charleville are either released into a predator-proof park, or sent to zoos such as ours with accredited breeding programmes.
At the moment our only other bilby is also a female. When conditions are right, the Save the Bilby Fund will source a genetically compatible male to join them. Meanwhile, we remain proud participants in the captive breeding programme for this adorable little marsupial.
