A Helping Hand

Have you ever wondered just what goes on behind the scenes in a place as diverse as Billabong Sanctuary? It takes an enormous amount of work across a broad range of different skills to keep our animals healthy and happy. What do echidnas eat? How do you fence in a water buffalo? Who keeps all those enclosures so tidy?

Would you like to get to know our native animals better and help in their ongoing care?

Billabong Sanctuary invites YOU to take an active part in the day-to-day running of our wildlife park. We are inviting anyone with a bit of spare time to come down and give us a hand.

Volunteer opportunities are available in several areas:

Grounds keeping and Maintenance: If you have bit of a flair with a paintbrush or can swing a hammer or a shovel, you could help with repairs and upgrades to enclosures, footpaths and gardens beds. Keep fit and help keep the park looking its best.

Mel - food preparationFood Prep: The day starts with the morning run to feed all the animals and clean out cages. Then, in our special Food Prep room, the next day’s rations are prepared. You could help with chopping and weighing fruit, meat and other delectables. All the diets are carefully controlled, and our staff have written easy-to-follow recipes for each animal’s daily intake.

Administration: Maybe you’d like to help us coordinate our merry band of volunteers, or perhaps work on signage around the park, or help write training manuals. Perhaps you have a special skill in information technology and could help us set up a Billabong Sanctuary presence on Facebook.

torresian pideonInterpretation/ Informal Talks: If you’d like to meet some of the fascinating people who come to Billabong from all corners of the globe, perhaps you’d like to give an informal talk in the walk-through aviary and the octagonal aviary. You would feed the inhabitants, such as Torresian pigeons, kookaburras, and parrots, while you share your enthusiasm for native wildlife in a short morning presentation.

If you would like to commit a bit of time on a regular basis to help us achieve our goals of education and wildlife conservation we’d love to have you join us. Contact Bob on 47 788 344, send us an e-mail or come along to the next information session (advertised in the Townsville Bulletin). Thanks for your help.
